With the retail industry teeming with several bedding options, it has become tough to choose the best one. But if you are looking for sustainable and non-synthetic bedding options, then bamboo or TENCEL is your best call. Both bamboo and TENCEL sheets are manufactured from wood pulp and are considered the best alternative to synthetic sheets. Although both resemble each other in properties, certain subtle differences make them unique in their ways.
Snoozy Monk, Canada’s leading bamboo sheet manufacturers, explains in this article the making of bamboo and TENCEL fabrics and the reasons why they make the best bedding option.

Making of bamboo and TENCEL fabrics
Bamboo and TENCEL are wood pulp materials. While bamboo sheets are made out of bamboo stems, TENCEL is made from eucalyptus wood pulp. Here is a brief go-through of different stages of bamboo and TENCEL sheet making and the many reasons why both are regarded better than their cotton and synthetic counterparts.
Bamboo fabrics are either chemically or mechanically manufactured. In the mechanical process, the bamboo stems are crushed into pulp and are broken down using natural enzymes. The fibre thus obtained is then combed and spun into bamboo linen.
Several chemicals, including the highly corrosive sodium hydroxide, are utilized in the chemical manufacturing of bamboo linen. While the process is harmful and toxic to the natural environment, its speed and efficiency make it a popular manufacturing choice.
TENCEL fabric manufacturing is an environmentally friendly and clean process. The manufacturing process uses non-toxic and eco-friendly solutions, making the entire production green and sustainable.
Cellulose fibres extracted from eucalyptus plants are kept in non-toxic solvents like N-methylmorpholine N-oxide and are woven into long fibres. Since the entire process is a closed-loop process, fabric manufacturing utilizes almost all the solvents and does not leak them into the environment. It is also worthy to note that 99 percent of the water utilized in the production is recycled.
What makes a better choice- bamboo sheets or TENCEL sheets?
Both Bamboo and TENCEL sheets are quite alike in their properties. Some of the common properties are:
- They are smooth and extremely soft.
- Both the fabrics are breathable and wick the moisture away from the body. They make perfect fabrics for people who struggle sleeping in hot and humid weather.
- Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties make the fabric less prone to odour, mould, and mildew.
While TENCEL sheets are usually cool materials and are perfect for warm sleepers, bamboo sheets are best for hot sleepers. TENCEL sheets wrinkle less and have a better crisper texture than their bamboo counterparts. Moreover, the long fibres in TENCEL make it smoother than the bamboo fabrics. However, the TENCEL’s less lustrous and less matte looks make it aesthetically inferior to bamboo sheets.
